Vivienne Tam Yoga Collection: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week S/S 2012
By Sarah Kleinhenz, Fashion Week Correspondent
When going to a see a collection for fashion week, you can usually assume that it will be inside somewhere. You take your seat, and watch the models strut down the runway in the latest collection from a designer. Well, Vivienne Tam‘s newest project was a little different. She’s launching a yoga collection for the spring, and to show off this fabulous new venture, she staged a live presentation! (Yes, there were actually ladies doing yoga, while wearing her newest collection.) What’s a more creative way to show off clothes meant for exercise than by actually doing exercise?! Very creative, if you ask me!
VT teamed up with the leading Chinese sports brand LI-NING to present the first-ever Fashion Yoga collection using a “Live Sculpture Garden.” International Yoga experts Rodney Yee and Colleen Yee led about 20 ladies in choreographed yoga. It was great to see the athletic world and fashion world unite to create such a great collection. I definitely wanted to head to yoga that afternoon and snatch up some of this newest collection as well.
While speaking to VT, she said she created this line for the modern woman who travels the world and embraces the values of yoga. She said this line can transition from working out to running errands and picking up the kids, and she wanted to create something that didn’t necessarily look like your usual exercise clothing. She even told us that some of the garments, like the jacket she’s wearing in the picture below, could be worn over a maxi dress. So this yoga collection is very versatile, which is something most of us busy women can appreciate.
“I’ve been practicing yoga since the early 90s as it provides me with a sense of peace and focus,” — Vivienne Tam, designer
The garments were constructed using hemp- and organic-cotton-blended fabrics that allow moisture wicking, antibacterial and UV protection and natural deodorizing. She designed this collection with ombre geometric color-blocking in purples, greens, fuchsias, grays and blacks. So there’s something for everyone in this collection. There are t-shirts, sports bras, sports tops, capri pants, looser long pants, shorts and even jackets. VT knew what she was doing when she created this new venture, and I’m really looking forward to seeing this next spring. It might have just catapulted my exercise (or lack there of) routine into high gear. Anyone want to join me in an afternoon yoga class?
P.S. The ladies wore Origins 100-percent organic makeup during the presentation – it’s all natural and long lasting. Their hair was styled by Tela Hair Organics by Philip Pelusi.
