Oscars Red Carpet: Heart It or Hate It?
The Oscars red carpet is a night I always look forward to, like any fashion-loving chicster. No, really. I lock myself in my room away from all screaming babies and kids (bless my husband) and just focus. The dresses…the sparkly jewelry…the hair and makeup. Bless the celebrity stylists who work so hard to make these women look impeccable. (And it’s definitely a shame you can’t ever see all of the fabulous shoes!)
This year’s red carpet brought lots of color! But true to my Virgo self, my favs wound up being those with a more muted palette. I like a dress that makes an entrance with its style and doesn’t rely on color alone.
Emma Stone has been one of my favs on every, single red carpet lately and I’ve about decided that she’s just perfect. That’s all it can be, right? Her new tousled ‘do is everything, and I loved how she swept it up to the side for an asymmetrical look to pair with her amazing gold Elie Saab gown. And the back of this dress was completely cut-out and shut-up-I-love-it-so-much jaw-dropping gorgeous. That’s all.
Who else looked great showing a little skin? Naomi Watts, of course. This girl’s gown game was ON. Loved that Armani Prive because heavens, that bandeau. And I’m pretty sure it sparkled. It reminds me of my fav workout top, but so much chicer. The back is glorious indeed.
And I simply can’t walk away from a red carpet viewing without loving a pair of LBDs. These are anything but your typical, however. Margot Robbie left Twitter going crazy with her understated elegance in YSL. I couldn’t be more obsessed with this entire look down to that Van Cleef & Arpels necklace. It works perfectly with that V-neck and I’ve gotta say, I love a dress with sleeves.
But a chic Margiela LBD with no sleeves? Cate Blanchett makes that look incredible without hardly trying. Her look proves the power of the accessory and I love, love, love it. The Tiffany & Co. turquoise necklace left me staring all night until I finally couldn’t help but put her at the top of my list. Margiela plus turquoise Tiffany equals simplistic perfection.
And, of course, Reese Witherspoon brought her best look again. A clean-lined, off-the-shoulder Tom Ford gown that looked white all night on screen, but I’m getting reports it’s actually ice blue with a black velvet border. It’s just the opposite of her 2011 look. Her (sweet, sweet) stylist Leslie Fremar is one of the most respected in the business and def knows what works. And kudos to Molly Stern application (who will be on the blog soon!) for her amazing, glowing make-up (St. Tropez is an essential!).
There weren’t too many dresses on my “extreme no” list and for the sake of being kind, I’m not even going to go there and really “hate it.” (hey, it just made a good title, y’all.) But truly? I read so many tweets loving Julianne Moore in this custom Chanel. While, yes, it is custom Chanel, I’ve seen Julianne (a fellow redhead) rock so many more gorgeous dresses (hello, green is def her color.) And while Patricia Arquette is always her quirky self, the fit of her dress was quite the same. It didn’t work for me. Big busts need not wear white on top with such little support. Amen?
Others I sighed at from afar? Jessica Chastain (just wow…I’ve never seen her look so dowdy)…Gwyneth Paltrow (her shoulder was literally in bloom) and Jennifer Lopez (many people loved, but I had a hard time taking her seriously with those pink lips).
A few other awards, before we go…
Best makeup? Def Kerry Washington
Best hair? Margot Robbie (I’ll have the deets from Garnier on here soon!)
Most unexpected gown that I kinda liked? Marion Cotillard in Dior
Best body? Zoe Saldana (hello, she had twins in December)
Best dress hue? America Ferrera in a gorgeous ombre teal crepe Jenny Packham
Best male? Adam Levine. No explanation here.
Best shoes? Lupita Nyong’O in custom Nicholas Kirkwood (satin Casati pearl slingback pump)

Nice recap! I missed a lot of these but agree with many of your picks. Love me some Emma Stone, and Cate can do no wrong. Lupita's shoes: just WOW! Patricia Arquette always looks so uncomfortable and awkward. If she looked better, I think she'd FEEL better, no?
